Creating Safe Schools: Reducing Bullying and EMBRACING Diversity
“Creating Safe Schools: Reducing Bullying and EMBRACING Diversity.”
Type of Presentation: Keynote, Breakout Session or Workshop
This hands on session presents a positive, pro-active approach to reducing bullying in our schools. It shows how to create a culture that is safe and welcoming for all people; including students, staff and parents. This workshop encourages participants to move beyond merely accepting our differences to the point of embracing the diverse world we live in.
Participants will explore their own individual diversity profile to help understand what motivates people to advocate for diversity and inclusion. This paves the way for engaging in meaningful discussion of tough issues in a calm and respectful manner.
We discuss the Minnesota Safe Schools Act and learn how to implement components of the legislation to streamline the process. Following the procedures outlined in the legislation helps get everyone on board and has a huge impact on school safety. The task is not as daunting as it may seem.
The non-threatening atmosphere of this workshop helps participants get in touch with their own fear and bias without judgment. It is then that we can embrace our differences, appreciate our uniqueness, and celebrate our commonality. Educators leave the session armed with skills to build bridges.
Small steps taken consistently by committed people prepare our young people to flourish in our global economy.

It includes an historical perspective of our quest for respect and dignity of all human beings, it helps participants discover and deal with their own fear and bias, and it develops specific strategies for dealing with bullying in no uncertain terms. The major focus, however, is on proactively creating a climate of mutual respect that involves participation of all staff and students.
